Newly installed ceiling fan and recessed lights in a ranch-house living room

When to call an electrician for lighting

  • Adding a ceiling fan where there is only a light, or no fixture at all.
  • A fan that wobbles, hums or hangs from a box not made for fans.
  • Recessed lights in a kitchen or living room, or replacing old cans with LED.
  • Lights that flicker in several rooms or dim when the AC starts.
  • Dimmers that buzz or switches that run warm.
  • Outdoor, porch, flood or motion lights for a driveway, yard or alley.

Flicker across several rooms can be a loose connection in the panel or service. That is not a bulb problem. See emergency electrician help.

What the work typically involves

  1. Site check

The contractor looks at ceiling height, attic access above the room, the existing box and switch, and which circuit feeds it.

  2. Box and support

Fans need a box listed for fan support, fixed to framing or a brace. Recessed lights need fixtures rated for the ceiling and insulation.

  3. Wiring and switching

Separate fan and light control may need a new wire to the switch. New fixtures may need a new switch leg or circuit.

  4. Install and test

Fixtures go up, fans are balanced, and the circuit is tested. Larger jobs get a city inspection.

Ceiling fans in Lubbock homes

With about 92 days a year at 90°F or hotter (NOAA 1991–2020 normals), ceiling fans earn their keep here. Many Lubbock ranch homes have 8-foot ceilings and attics above, which usually makes fan work simpler. Vaulted ceilings, finished attics or flat roofs mean longer downrods, more ladder work and fishing wire through closed spaces, which can add cost.

Ask the contractor to confirm the box is fan-rated, the switch can control the fan and light separately if you want that, and the fan is sized for the room.

Recessed lighting

Recessed lights, or slim LED wafers, are a common update in older Lubbock homes around Tech Terrace, Overton and Rush that started with one center fixture per room. Under an insulated attic, fixtures should be rated for insulation contact (often labeled IC), and airtight models limit leaks into a hot attic. Ask how many fixtures the circuit can carry, and whether it needs a new circuit.

Attic work in July is slow and hot. Ask whether the price or schedule changes in summer.

Outdoor and security lighting

Porch lights, floods, motion sensors and landscape lighting help with driveways and alleys. Outdoor fixtures and outlets need weather-rated parts and GFCI protection where code requires it. Spring wind and blowing dust are hard on outdoor fixtures, and hail can crack lenses and covers. After a storm like the June 23, 2023 hail in Southwest Lubbock and Wolfforth, check outdoor fixtures for cracks before you switch them on.

Ransom Canyon and lake-area homes may want dock, path or boathouse lighting. Ask the contractor about wet-location ratings, GFCI protection and how the circuit reaches the fixture.

Texas rules in plain terms

Texas requires electrical contractors and electricians to be licensed by TDLR (Occupations Code Ch. 1305). Check any license at tdlr.texas.gov/LicenseSearch and look for the contractor's TECL number on the truck and the written proposal. TDLR lists a minimum of $300,000 per occurrence and $600,000 aggregate in liability insurance for electrical contractors, so ask for a certificate of insurance. Texas requires it; verify it.

The City of Lubbock enforces its adopted NEC with local amendments (the 2020 NEC per a 2024 ordinance); the state code moved to the 2026 NEC on Sept. 1, 2026. Confirm what applies to your job with the contractor and the city. Lubbock requires a homeowner permit and inspection for an owner-occupied homestead (check with City of Lubbock Building Safety).

Questions about a license? TDLR answers at (512) 463-6599 or (800) 803-9202 (Texas only). This is general information, not legal advice.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • What is your TECL contractor number? (Then look it up on TDLR's license search.)
  • Can you send a certificate of insurance before work starts?
  • Will I get a written, itemized quote that lists parts, labor and the permit?
  • Is there a trip or diagnostic fee, and does it come off the repair price?
  • What is your after-hours or weekend rate, if I need that?
  • Who pulls the permit, and is the permit fee in the quote?
  • Who schedules the inspection, and will I get a copy of the final?
  • Is the box fan-rated, and is a new box included in the price?
  • Are the recessed fixtures IC-rated and airtight?

Frequently asked questions

How much does ceiling fan installation cost in Lubbock?

2026 cost guides put a ceiling fan on existing wiring at about $150–$500, and $400–$1,500 when new wiring, a new switch or a fan-rated box is needed. These are national estimates, not quotes. High ceilings, no attic access and a fan-rated box add cost. Ask for a written price that says whether the box and switch are included.

Can a ceiling fan hang from a regular light fixture box?

Not safely in most cases. A fan moves and weighs more than a light, so it needs a box listed for fan support, secured to framing or a brace. An electrician checks the existing box and replaces it if it is not fan-rated. Ask about it in the quote, because it is a common extra cost.

Do I need a permit to install recessed lighting in Lubbock?

Usually, when the job adds new wiring or circuits. Swapping a fixture on an existing box may count as minor work. The City of Lubbock electrical permit starts at $50 (FY 2023–24 schedule). Rules can change, so ask your contractor who pulls the permit, or check with City of Lubbock Building Safety.

What kind of recessed lights work in an insulated attic?

Fixtures under an insulated ceiling should be rated for insulation contact, often labeled IC, and many homeowners choose airtight models to limit attic air leaks. Lubbock attics get very hot in summer, so ask the contractor about fixture ratings, LED heat, and whether the attic has room to work.
